Voice In Canada Flash Briefing #833
Hello and happy Sunday, hope you are doing well.
Sunday is a fun day for us because we get to answer questions from the community Northern voice.
And today’s question comes from a relatively new member of our Facebook page, Darryl Gittins, so, I hope I said your name right.
And the question is, “Hi folks, newbie here. Sorry if it’s been asked before, but I was wondering when these two features might be available in Canada, the Samuel L. Jackson voice, and the Alexa, remember this function, thanks.”
So this question really is related to a lot of the pin points that we have here in Canada versus the United States, because the reality is there are a number of features that are available in the States that are just not here in Canada.
This is one of those, or both of these are features that fall under that category.
So the short answer is they’re not available in Canada.
I thought it was worth mentioning this particular question or highlighting it because this also extends to skills and a lot of new people that are joining our community may not be aware of this, that there is this distinction between US and Canada features when it comes to Alexa.
Devices under a US account with US settings, and then they’re able to access the US features.
We really don’t have control over that, well, Amazon has control over which of the native functions come to different countries in different regions at certain times.
And then the individual developers of the skills have the capability to decide when and where their individual skills go to Canada or to wherever.
So unfortunately, it’s not a great scenario. Now, the catch here is sometimes you will hear people in Canada that say, Oh no, I’ve got that feature.
They don’t actually truly have that feature, if they’ve got a Canadian account, what they are likely doing is they’re setting up their Echo devices under a US account with US settings, and then they’re able to access the US features.
The downside to this is that they then lose some of the geo specific features if they want to know their local weather, because now all of a sudden they’ve told their device, they’re living somewhere else.
So something to keep in mind, but that is available if you want to do that.
If you want information on how to change those settings, you can always go to my website, AlexainCanada.ca go to the FAQ section and you’ll find it there.
But otherwise that’s the relatively long answer to your question, Darryl.
Thanks so much for your question and I hope you have a wonderful rest of your weekend, I’ll talk to you tomorrow.
