Voice In Canada Flash Briefing #337

Hello there, and welcome to today’s flash briefing. As you know, I was in Chattanooga last week at the Alexa Conference and it was fascinating. There were so many great talks. I met so many great people. And, it really was a wonderful experience. As an aside, if you get a chance to come out to any of these voice first conferences, they’re truly remarkable.

One of the things that I really love about them, one of the highlights, is, networking with people and meeting people in this space, because it is absolutely incredible, the type of people that are pushing this technology forward. One of those people that I met, and that I’ve actually interviewed on my podcast previously is Brian Roemmele.

He gave the most incredible talk. He has been described as a modern-day Thomas Edison. He has been described as the “Oracle of Voice” He is the one that has been given credit with creating the term “Voice First”, and one of the highlights of my experience at this conference was meeting him. Recently, the publication VoiceBot.ai published some predictions from some of the leaders in the Voice First space.

And, they wanted to get Brian’s predictions of what’s we’re going to see in 2019, and I thought, given the fact that he just gave this great talk at the conference, it’d be interesting to share some of his thoughts for what’s going on in the next year. He feels that there’s actually going to be something, what he’s referring to as “The cold winter in voice technology” towards the end of 2019.

We’re going to see what he believes is some fatigue, created by real or perceived limitations of what voice technology can do.

Predictions from Brian Roemmele

What that means, is that, because the novelty of the voice first technology is probably going to wear off a little bit, we’re going to see what he believes is some fatigue, created by real or perceived limitations of what voice technology can do. Right now there’s tons of hype, right? It’s new.

And he thinks that when that hype dies down a little bit, people might become a little bit frustrated with what things the voice technology can’t do at this point. So this is very interesting. We’re going to see how this plays out.

There are a number of other predictions that he makes, but one of the really interesting ones, and we’ll see if this comes true, is that he feels that Amazon will actually release a phone, the Alexa phone, with a feature set which includes new wireless ear and microphone technology.

This will be very, very fascinating to see because as you may know, Amazon previously tried to have a phone and it failed. He also believes that Amazon will acquire a well-known company for their AI technology and voice first patents, making it one of the largest patent holders of this technology in the world.

So this is going to be very interesting to see. Now, I encourage you to check out my previous podcasts to hear more from Brian Roemmele. He’s a fascinating guy, and I think you will really, really be intrigued by what he has to say. Alright. I will talk to you again tomorrow. Have a great day.
