Voice In Canada Flash Briefing #768
Hey there, Dr. Teri Fisher here, hope you’re having a good day.
Hope you’re doing well, hope you are healthy and all those around you are healthy as well.
Today I want to talk a little bit about an article that was published recently in one of the popular news outlets.
And the gist of the article was that they were saying that now that everybody’s at home, we should all be muting our Alexa devices because all these people that are doing work from home, they don’t want the Alexa devices spying on what they’re doing for work.
And I was talking with some colleagues about this particular article and this is my personal editorial comments on this and I’d be very interested to hear yours as well, is I think that we’re sort of beyond this type of article now.
I think it’s sort of clickbait to be honest, where they’re getting people to click on this because it provokes a greater sense of fear of what these devices are doing.
And if you’ve been following along with what I’ve been speaking about, and if you’ve done a little research on your own, you know that Alexa device, the Echo devices, they only actually record anything if you say the wake word.
The Echo devices, they only actually record anything if you say the wake word.
If you don’t say the wake word, they’re not recording anything.
Yes, they are listening for the wake word, but they’re not recording anything and they’re not processing any information that you’re saying.
And so when I hear these articles, particularly at this time when people have a lot of anxiety and I believe that the voice technology can have such a remarkable place in helping people to get through their daily lives to keep people occupied, to even help with social connectivity, connecting to other people through drop in or phone calls through the devices.
I think it’s such a remarkable technology and these kinds of headlines, I don’t think they’re doing anybody, any type of service when they’re not accurate.
I would love to hear your thoughts on this, hit me up on Twitter DrTeriFisher and I’d love to know what you think.
Do you agree with me? Do you disagree? Let’s have a discussion about it and hopefully, hopefully regardless of how you feel about this, you are finding that your device is helpful to you during this time.
Stay safe, be well and I will talk to you again tomorrow. Take care.
