Voice In Canada Flash Briefing #719

So here is a very interesting little bit of news that I came across and it’s all about a study that was done and published in the journal of Cognitive Development.

And they looked at if kids are more likely to trust a device like Amazon, Alexa or their teacher and what do you think?

So they asked kids that were between five and eight years old and for example, a question would have been how many days does it take Mars to finish a single orbit?

And then the kids were offered contrasting responses and the virtual assistant would say 600 days and their teacher had told them 700 days.

Who do you think the kids trusted? Well, interestingly, the researchers found that the kids overwhelmingly trusted the teacher over Alexa, even if the teacher was wrong.

And the way they described this, they said that kids trust their teachers because they’ve learned to trust them.

Whereas they’re still figuring out whether or not sources like voice assistance are trustworthy, so very interesting.

How do you gauge the trustworthiness of an assistant versus somebody?

Do Kids Trust Alexa or Their Teachers

They did say though, however, that as kids get older and they learn more about computers, that relationship with them changes.

So it’d be interesting to know at what age do they start to trust these devices more and I mean that raises a whole bunch of philosophical questions, right?

Like how do you develop trust with a voice assistants? Should you develop trust with a voice assistant?

How do you gauge the trustworthiness of an assistant versus somebody, a human being in your life?

All kinds of questions surrounding that. So if you’re interested in joining the discussion about this and sharing your thoughts, I’d love to hear them.

Just send me a message on Twitter and my Twitter handle is Dr.TeriFisher and I’d love to hear your thoughts on this one.

I think this is a very, very interesting topic. So there you go, little food for thought and before I sign off for today, I want to tell you that I have a very special flash briefing coming up this Monday.
