Amazon has updated its Amazon Music app, which lets you cast music to your Alexa devices. With this update, you can now listen to music on your Echo smart speaker while controlling playback from your mobile device.

“With this new feature customers can easily transition the playlist they were listening to on their commute home from their Amazon Music app to Alexa devices in their living room when they walk in the door,” Amazon said in a statement. “Even if you switch to voice controls, the Amazon Music app will match the progress of the music playback.”

To try it out, you’ll need to update the Amazon Music app or download it from the App Store or Google Play. Once updated (or downloaded), you’ll see Alexa Cast icon on the ‘now playing’ screen. Once you tap it, you’ll then see your list of available Alexa-enabled devices, select one or a group, and it’s done! There is also an option for you to stream music to your AirPlay devices as well.

Once cast music from your mobile device to your Echo speaker, you can continue to control playback from your iPhone or iPad.

As of now, Alexa Cast only works with Amazon Music, but according to an Amazon spokesperson, the company plans to make the feature available to other music services at some point in the future.

Meanwhile, Amazon also this week announced that all Alexa devices will have a feature called Echo Spatial Perception. This new feature analyzes your voice and determines which Alexa gadget should respond, in order to prevent multiple gadgets from answering you at the same time.

This will enable all your Echo devices and third-party Alexa-supported gadgets to communicate better with each other, so only the closest one wakes when you use a voice command.
