Door hardware maker Schlage has announced that it will make its Schlage Sense and Schlage Connect deadbolts fully compatible with Amazon Alexa, allowing homeowners to unbolt these smartlocks totally hands-free.
“Amazon Alexa users can now use the Alexa app to enable or disable the new voice unlock functionality for their Schlage Sense and Schlage Connect locks. The feature is disabled by default for security. Users will be required to log into their Amazon Alexa app using their password to enable the feature initially, and then create a unique PIN, which must be spoken before Alexa unlocks the door. The feature is immediately disabled after three incorrect voice code attempts,” reads a statement from Schlage.
Unlocking doors with voice command has some controversies. Lock makers do not want to create the appearance of vulnerability in their locks. That’s why Amazon has stayed away from including voice unlocking as a feature of Alexa’s smart lock software. But now, users can unlock their Alexa enabled smart locks without needing to craft a custom skill of their own.
How does the Alexa smartlock feature work?
To enable Alexa for these smartlocks for the first time, users must log into their Amazon Alexa app by using their password. Next, they’ll need to set up a unique 4-digit PIN which must be spoken before Alexa unlocks the door.
When the user attempts to open the door, they will need to say, “Alexa, unlock the front door.” Then Alexa will ask for the PIN. If the user provides 3 consecutive incorrect PINs, Alexa will disable the unlock feature and the door will stay locked. To re-enable the feature, users must log in to their Amazon Alexa app and repeat the process.
NOTE: You’ll need the Schlage Sense Wi-Fi Adapter in order to use Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt with Alexa. There’s no monthly fee. Your smartphone will use this adapter to gain remote access to your lock via Schlage Sense app. Also, to use Amazon Alexa with the Schlage Connect Touchscreen Deadbolt, you’ll need a Samsung SmartThings or Wink hub.
