Hello, it’s Teri Fisher here with your Voice in Canada flash briefing for Friday.
And today I want to tell you about a study that has just come out of UBC out of the University of British Columbia.
They looked at the way that people can potentially fear the misuse of a smart speaker, not from hackers, but from people that they actually live with and know.
So what they did was they looked at about 26 different people and they surveyed them and they found that people feared potential misuse of the device from those that they actually live with and know.
Let me give you a couple of examples of things that were raised as concerns.
Their housemates could order stuff online, over hear private conversations or access other people’s reminders.
They worried, for example, that their housemates could order stuff online, over hear private conversations or access other people’s reminders, calendars, phone contexts and so on and that was a quote from Konstantin Beznosov.
He’s the professor of electrical and computer engineering and specializes in cyber security at UBC.
So, very interesting that more people seem to be, at least those that were surveyed here seemed to be concerned about misuse from people within their own home than from hackers.
