Voice In Canada Flash Briefing #658

Alright. It’s Teri Fisher here from Voice in Canada. And, it’s Sunday, and on Sundays, as you may know, I like to answer questions from the community.

And, today’s question comes out of our Facebook community. By the way, if you’re not a member of the Facebook community, just check it out.

You can go to AlexainCanada.ca/Community. Okay, so here’s the deal. Martin Lee asked this question. He’s wondering, “Is there a way to prevent others from using your Echo device when they come into your home?”

Because, he actually wrote a funny story here. He said, “I tried this at my friend’s house as a joke, and I didn’t think it would actually work. And, his Alexa device said it was added to their cart when when Martin had said, Alexa order two tons of creamed corn.”

He says, “Thankfully he hadn’t enabled one click ordering. Okay. So first of all, two tons of cream corn is way too much. And secondly, luckily I hadn’t clicked a one click ordering.”

So, I want to give a shout out to a bunch of people in the community here, Tara Stiles and Dorcas Zabel, I think it’s pronounced, and Pete Breedy, and Sharon Ore, and Sean Michael McKay.

There’s voice personalization so that Alexa can understand who you are.

Can You Prevent Someone from Using Your Echo?

Everybody was chiming in here and it was great to see the input. Here’s the bottom line. You can’t prevent somebody else from talking to Alexa.

Yes, there’s voice personalization so that Alexa can understand who you are, but that doesn’t mean that she won’t respond to other people’s voices.

So when it comes to ordering things, purchasing things, you have an option, right? You can either turn that function on, or you can turn it off, or you can also set it up that you have to enter a code in order for a purchase to go through.

Now here’s the thing, if you enter a code, basically you’re saying a verbal combination code out loud. So anybody that’s around could hear that, but it does prevent somebody from coming into your home, and ordering two tons of cream corn.

Alright? So I hope you find that helpful. And Martin, thanks for the question. Again, thanks for everybody else for chiming in with your answers.

It was really great to see the community supporting that. And, AIC Nation, great to hear from you and I look forward to chatting with you again tomorrow. Have a great day.
