Voice In Canada Flash Briefing #536
Hey there. So it’s Teri here and I’ve got some really exciting Canadian news specific to Amazon and their cloud innovation centers.
This is really cool, particularly because I work at UBC, I’m very excited about this.
So, Amazon and UBC jointly just announced that there is a new cloud innovation center at the University of British Columbia, which is going to be opening in 2020.
So what is a cloud innovation center? Well, they define this as a hub for public sector community driven challenges that will address, over time, the critical problems facing governmental organizations including education and nonprofits.
Now, UBC’s CIC will focus on community health and wellbeing.
The really cool thing about this, is that this is the first one to be ever announced in Canada. There are other ones in various other places in the United States and actually in Europe as well.
This is opening up a whole new area for Canadian research in using Alexa to improve our health.
This is the very first one in Canada. So this is exciting. What is this actually going to do?
It’s going to support students, faculty staff that are doing interesting projects and research using the AWS service, the cloud computing service that Amazon has. And why is this relevant to us?
Well, Alexa, the voice service is a cloud based service, and so, this is going to allow for Canadian innovation, particularly UBC, to look at these challenges in health and wellbeing, and make some real contributions to how we can use Alexa devices as part of solutions for these big challenges that we have.
So I’m very, very excited about this. I intend to find out more about this, and I hope to be able to get involved in this in somehow, in some way.
And, I’m going to keep you updated on what’s going on, because this is really opening up a whole new area for Canadian research in how we can use the Alexa service to improve our health and wellbeing.

1. Open your Alexa app and click on the Menu button > Settings > Flash Briefing.
2. Click on “Add Content” and search for “Voice in Canada”.
3. Click on “Voice in Canada” and the Enable button.
