Voice In Canada Flash Briefing #476
Hey there, it’s Teri here and I hope you are doing well on this fine Sunday. As you know, on Sundays I like to take this opportunity to answer questions from the community.
And, I received a question via the contact form on my blog, from Mohan V, and it’s a very, very interesting question. The question reads, “I feel rude when I shout stop to Alexa to abandon its prompt message.
Is there a polite way to do the same thing without being obnoxious?” I love this question. And, it’s actually been a lot of discussions recently about the way that we as a society are learning to interact with these voice assistants.
Are we being rude to them, and does that matter? Is it a type of behavior that we are teaching to our kids that’s inappropriate, or do they recognize the fact that we’re talking to a device?
So, that’s a whole debate for another time, but to answer the question, is there something that you can do that’s less rude or less of obnoxious than just yelling, “Alexa stop”, and the bottom line is, there is. It all comes down to how you say it.
It all comes down to how you say it.
And, just as if you were doing something with someone, or they were on the TV, and you wanted them to stop doing something, typically, if you were being polite, you would say, “Hey, would you please stop that?” or “Could you please stop?” or “Stop please.”
You know, something along those lines and the bottom line is, Alexa understands that. So, if you say that keyword, stop, in a phrase, and of course, there are many different ways, as I just illustrated that you can say that phrase, but as long as you say that word, stop, Alexa will typically understand that, and it’s a way for you to be polite to Alexa.
So, I want to know, when you talk to Alexa, do you say, “Stop please?” or do you just say, “Stop?” I want to know. Send me a message on Twitter @DrTeriFisher. Alright. Have a great day. Talk to you tomorrow.
